The week so far...

Yes, it's that time again... the insomniac tendencies after emerged before another spiel of nightshift and i thought it would be a good time to update everyone.

Times are a changin... the wee isle received a new shopping mall and vivo (city) mania has hit the island. We also received a new GAP store and even more exciting i discovered that the best way to lose weight is to have acute gastric flu as i can now fit into ZARA - yeah baby! As part of the vivo recce, a friend and i checked out the cinema and it was pretty disappointing as despite the initial gloss and novelty. The seats were uncomfortable. Quite pun-worthy as we went to see "Stay Alive" (entertaining tacky horror) and the seats were 'stiff' - geddit?? haha Yes what i lose in sleep, i make up for in cheese and corn...

However, in the wake of all these new developments, I feel sad that sometimes things are developing too fast and we don't have time to smell the coffee. Unfinished building units, unoccupied but open malls - wow! Whatever happened to that sense of satisfaction and closure in completing a task?!

Nonetheless, it was a cool week though. I have realised that it helps getting up early (yes v bizarre but it seems to work!) and doing stuff before nightshift be it catching a movie, chilling out with friends, playing the guitar, getting some exercise - walks and getting some coffee! I'm trying to work out things to do this week - maybe go for more walks, get my guitar restrung (think i got a bit overzealous on some franz ferdinand chords), squeeze in some roller-blading, more soup runs, catch a movie, catch up with friends etc...

Oh yeah, had some alcohol too - margaritas, wine and beer. Talk about the whole shebang! Checked out a cool restaurant called Giraffe, two movies and a great local band at walas as well. I'm really impressed with The Unxpected. The lead singer had some fierce vocals and she really had er... balls as she did really good renditions of Zepplin, Stones and Muse which i really did not expect. Music-wise, I also tried getting hold of the new Albert Hammond Jr (of The Strokes fame) album but it's not out in stores yet - boo :( Check out his myspace - the tracks sound better than some of The Strokes tracks.

Movies - Aside from Stay Alive, also checked out Les Revenants (They Came Back) which was summarized as 'zombies having an existential crisis'. However, i thought it was a really cool French movie. It tackled the whole return from the dead in a refined manner as there was no gore and some humour i.e. in one scene, a task force of sorts debated how to tackle pensions and retirement benefits for these guys who came back. Though one theory is that it was subtly alluding to emergency housing and French bureaucracy, I am sure there is a deeper meaning to it delving on how we deal with loss as well as the euthanasia debate. It is really a nice change to watch foreign cinema as opposed to usual hollywood big budget fayre. I read on apple.com that the U.S. is having a Viva Pedro (Almodovar) film festival - How cool is that?? I love Almodovar films. Despite the irreverence towards the dysfunctional and neurotic, his films are always beautifully shot and stylish.

Looks like i have written an essay! I'll save some good stuff / rants for next time. Here's to another good week!
